Early Survey Results From Digest Released Preliminary data from the annual NCPA-Pfizer Digest indicate that about 1,000 independent community pharmacies closed their doors last year, a vivid illustration of the toll of low and slow Medicare Part D reimbursements.
“If anyone in Congress needed proof that Medicare Part D requires fixing and soon, this is it,” said NCPA President John Tilley, RPh. “I’d like every community pharmacist to contact their representative and senators and urge them to support prompt payment legislation.” (See item above.)
After 10 years of growth, total sales and prescription sales were relatively flat in 2006, the early Digest results indicate. Both gross profits and net operating income declined from 2005 to 2006.
“That the vast majority of the more than 23,300 independent pharmacies are using good business sense and niche services to hold their own and in some cases even expand is a testimony to the underlying strength of community pharmacy,” said Bruce Roberts, RPh, NCPA executive vice president and CEO. “We are committed to a legislative agenda and member services that not only will preserve independent community pharmacy as a vital health care resource, but expand opportunities for more dedicated entrepreneurs to join their ranks.”
